Kinja'd!!!2 Kinja'd!!! 25

Hey all, the wife and I are celebrating 15 years in October and wanted to plan a nice trip — just 4-7 days and preferably domestic for the simplicity and time commitment. Since Frontier flies nonstop from BHM-DEN a few times a week, I thought I’d take advantage of them for the first time (all the fancy stuff...checked bags and everything!).

Kinja'd!!!

I haven’t been out there since about 2001 when the old lady and I were first dating (Golden, Ft Collins, RMNP). We’re looking for something peaceful, luxurious, and not too busy — it would be nice to get a few hikes in, but we’re not bagging any fourteeners this time :)

At the moment, I’m drawing a blank — The Stanley Hotel in Estes Park seems nice, but a bit dated and isolated. No TV and no beer makes Ash something something. Any other recommendations within ~2 hours of Denver you might recommend?

We’re also going to spend a couple days in Denver, probably at the end of the trip, so recommendations there are welcome.

Yes, I’m bringing some cash if you know what I mean. But otherwise, we’re both 40 and not looking for crazy nightlife — just good, local culture and restaurants.

Thank in advance!

Don’t live there (wish I did) but I’ve visited several times. If you’re staying in Estes hit up Trail Ridge Road in Rocky Mtn National park

There are some good ATV rentals around that area and the trails in the park area nice as well. Near Denver, see if you can catch a concert at the Red Rock Amphiteather

I heard this road is nice as well

I just got back from a quick trip to Estes. It was nice and very relaxing. We rented an AirBNB and had a very good experience.

We just spent an anniversary weekend in Glenwood Springs and had a great time. Hiked up to Hanging Lake, ate good food, and also visited Aspen, Leadville & Vail and drove Independence Pass.

I’ll be sure to use the sleep deprivation excuse, as well :P

October is a great time to visit. Think about spending a night or two in one of the small mountain towns like Crested Butte. Break up the drive and stay a night in Glenwood Springs or somewhere like that where there are natural hot springs. There’s “adult only” hot springs where bathing suits are optional too.

Whatever you do, drink plenty of water and use sunscreen.

Awesome...I did almost that exact stuff in 1989 and it’s time to go back! Although I’ve never been to Glenwood Springs but have heard good stuff.

I think a cool car rental is in order. Makes the trip a lot more enjoyable.

Thanks...no worries, living in the Deep South, 1-2 gallons of water and SPF 30+ are an everyday thing for half the year :)

I almost did that, using Turo, but ended up wimping out. Looking forward to hearing what you get.

If you want to hike Hanging Lake, you have to get a permit in advance, FYI.

They do have construction going on in Glenwood Springs right now, but it didn’t hamper our visit. It’s a small town, so a very different vibe from some of the bigger resort towns in Colorado . Was really nice to walk around, get a meal, and check out some of the shops and old hotels . The adventure park & caves was fun & cool , and we hit the hot springs as well one evening (the more modern one). They have a vaudeville theater - we watched a silent movie (with historical commentary from the owner). Was really fun and interesting. They also have a small Doc Holliday exhibit in the basement of one of the local stores.

On the way back to Denver, we took the pass that goes through Golden and walked around there a bit.

Great trip.

The Green Russell in downtown Denver is a pretty cool speakeasy/cocktail/whiskey bar if you are into that sort of thing.

Not sure on the pricing (or weather) that time of year, but I’ve had luck getting condos in Aspen/Snowmass. There’s a lot to explore based from that area.

Simplicity ? Go to the Caribbean and get all inclusive. No worrying about cooking cleaning or pouring a drink

If you have some cash to drop, Broadmoor hotel in Colorado Springs is pretty cool. Plenty of cool hikes down there.

Steamboat Springs?

Aspen? Vail? Frisco?

You can barely throw a rock without hitting a cool place around here.

Sweet ! As previously stated, Glenwood is nice (I am biased, I live here) and the weather in October is usually nice. The ski resort towns are in off season, so nice and empty.

I came here to suggest the Broadmoor! I grew up in Colorado Springs and I always thought it was a cool place.

How long have you lived there? If you relocated, what took you there?

Such a great town. I could definitely see putting down roots in the area...

Just outside Glenwood since I finished grad school in Denver in 2005. The goal was always get back to the mountains, and I found a position 20 miles west which works well for me.

It is a nice place to live, relatively small town feel, with some fun events nearby and world class skiing, biking, and amazing mountain roads all around.

That’s awesome. I grew up and went to school in Missouri, and have lived half of my life in Oklahoma, but I feel most at home and at peace when I’m in the mountains, if that makes sense . My sister-in-law’s family had an amazing ranch north of Wolcott, and although they’ve sold it now, it’s my favorite place in the world (maybe tied with Yosemite).

I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to live in Colorado, but if I have my way, I’ll be spending more and more time there (and in Utah, Wyoming, Montana, northern California, etc.) as I get older.

Here’s the ranch. Her dad had a successful business and bought it as a hunting camp. No idea what he paid at the time...

They were generous enought to let our family use it several times through the years. So thankful that my kids got to visit there a couple times.

The dream is for several of us from our family and several of them from their family to get together and buy it back. Very unlikely, but something to aspire to.

Thankfully, we can still access the road in and could hike up Yarmony or Black sometime  like we did in the past.
